How to create 3D models for I-phone and Andriod with Maya.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information readily available yet for how to do this but here is the link to download the development tools. Basically it's a plugin-for maya that let's you export POD files. These can then be textured and displayed in code using openGL on the iphone etc.

Please note the SDK is ONLY for Maya 32 bit! It crashes Maya 64bit.

Here is the workflow>>>

First download the SDK and select the platform you would like to create models for.
http://www.imgtec.com/powervr/insider/sdkdownloads/index.asp

It's a tar.gz zipped file so you may need something like http://www.7-zip.org/ to unpack the file.

Install the POD file plugin for Maya by placing the PVRGeoPOD_v2010.mll file in the Maya plugins folder. (Autodesk/Maya/Bin/plug-ins)

In Maya will then have to go to Window>Settings/Preferences>Plugin- Manager scroll down and locate the PVRGeoPOD_v2010.mll and select the "loaded" and "autoload" checkboxes.

Then once you have your model select it all then go to menu File>Export Selection

Change your file type to save as POWEREVR Exporter (*.pod) and choose a location to save the file.

The SDK you downloaded also contains a utility called PVR_shaman which you can open the newly created POD file and check it out. The SDK also contains utilities for creating materials.

Hope this helps a little if there is interest I will perphaps be able to create a more detailed tutorial/tip later.

Please check "HELPFUL" below if it was, if not COMMENT below and tell me why! Don't miss another tutorial or tip! Subscribe to Maya Zest
